Mulan faced thousands of Huns in battle yet Snow White struggles against the villainous branch and leaf….
…aka a vital Reasons Why Snow White is a Useless Disney Princess post…
…aka a vital Reasons Disney Has Come So Far in Portraying Active Heroines post…
Disney, let us not regress badass fighting princesses into the passive, damsels in distress of yesteryear. (I’m looking at you, Princess Anna.)
PS: Don’t even get me started on her eating that apple. You look up shady in the dictionary and the Evil Witch’s picture is next to the definition.
Girl!!!! Mulan had a family who loved her. She had a grandma, a father and a mother. She had a nice house, nice clothes. She wasn’t the richest person in the world, but she was not walking around in rags like Snow White was.
Snow White had lost both her parents, been made a slave in her own house. She was probably abused mentally and physically. She was only fourteen years old. She ran away because someone was about to MURDER her. She probably has never left the castle grounds and was alone in a terrifying forest. Yet she managed to keep a smile and a positive attitude the entire time. Of course WE KNOW that strangers can’t be trusted, which is probably what the story was trying to tell. Don’t take food from strangers. She’s naive because she’s been cooped up in a castle her entire life. She’s trusting, which can be bad, as shown with the old hag.
Why do you even feel the need to compare the two? They each have their own stories. Snow White has no reason to save a country. Just like Mulan has no reason to run away from her crazy, abusive step mother.
And how do you even know what Anna is going to be like? We have about 3 and a half minutes worth of commercials for that movie, and we barely even know what’s going on.
Yes Mulan did something amazing, but that was her story. It wasn’t Snow White’s or Ariel’s or Tiana’s story. It was Mulan’s. Snow White had her own struggles and issues in her life that Mulan didn’t have to deal with. So don’t call Snow White a useless princess.
YES GIRL. Shannon… PREACHHHHHH.
You want to pull the Snow White is useless card? Do you? Do you really?
Watch how easily your own silly, sexist argument is turned around on you.
Mulan had a pretty good life. Her family loved her, she was supported materially, she had nice clothes and good food, and never had to lift a finger for things until she ran away to go to war. Which, by the way, was an abysmally stupid idea because she was basically going into a situation with a 99% chance of being killed, either by the enemy or her own comrades, therefore bringing even more grief and dishonor on her family than Fa Zhou dying in battle, or her not finding a good husband, could ever do. Compared to all the psychological and physical neglect and abuse Snow White went through since she was a child, that makes Snow White stronger than Mulan.
There. Rather ridiculous argument, isn’t it? Not to mention completely untrue, negating all of Mulan’s bravery and sacrifice, and comparing her to Snow White in ways that are completely unfair. Ways Mulan couldn’t possibly compete against because her circumstances and trials were so radically different.
DO YOU SEE MY POINT?
Snow White and Mulan grew up incredibly differently, and that’s not even counting their respective time periods/locations, but they’re actually nice mirrors of each other.
Mulan’s family loved and supported her, and did what they thought would be best for her (finding her a good match so she would be taken care of), yet Mulan is uncomfortable in her own skin, and awkward when made to act like a proper bride. Snow White’s stepmother loathed her to the point of homicide; she was forced from the time she was very young to act as a slave, performing intense labor, and living in sub par conditions. Despite this, Snow White is completely comfortable with herself. She understands that the only thing she has control over under Grimhilde’s abuse is how she responds to the situation, and she chooses to remain kind and optimistic that some day, things will get better. (And, like Mulan’s era, that did mean marrying into better situations.)
Do you realize, first of all, how much mental strength it takes to hold Snow White’s attitude in the face of such nightmares? It’s hard. So hard. The fact that the first we see Snow White, even on her knees and scrubbing stone, is when she’s humming, proves some serious strength of character.
So then they’re faced with death on a very personal basis (Snow’s attempted assassination and Mulan potentially losing her father and then entering the war zone herself). Snow White is terrified, and her panic/paranoia of people following her makes her see the world as a much darker place. AND BY THE WAY, do you know the first thing she says when she stops crying?
"I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to frighten you, but you don’t know what I’ve been through. And all because I was afraid. I’m so ashamed of the fuss I made." THEN WE HAVE WITH A SMILE AND A SONG, AND GO LOOK UP THE LYRICS, THAT SONG IS ALL ABOUT HOW EVEN THE DARKEST TIMES WILL SEEM BRIGHTER IF YOU CARRY A POSITIVE ATTITUDE. Then, “I really feel quite better now. I know everything will work out somehow. Everything’s going to be all right."
AND THEN SNOW WHITE SPEND THE REST OF THE MOVIEMAKING THE BEST OF HER SITUATION. She uses the skills she does have - cooking and cleaning and caring for others - to earn herself shelter and allies. That’s fantastic. Even Mulan had to work harder to earn the respect and love her troop than Snow White did.
Then hag!Grimhilde shows up, and honestly, put yourself in that situation. You’re shocked that your stepmother hates you enough to attempt regular murder, so it stands to reason that you doubt she’s actually supernatural. (Remember, the person saying that is Grumpy, who’s demonstrated paranoia and misconceptions about women; he thinks all women have “wicked wiles” to entice men, after all). So you’re probably expecting her to send other hunters to kill you, and you’re on the lookout for that.
But then an old woman shows up who can barely walk, much less attack you. She’s carrying only an apple basket, and appears to have heart problems. Being the kind, trusting person you are, you invite her in only for some water.
Now, we know it’s Grimhilde because we saw her transform. But really, as Snow White, do you really expect that to actually be the case? Grimhilde’s hate is off the charts, it shocks even weathered huntsmen. Yes it was overly trusting, and Snow’s kindness and willingness to believe the best in people led to her poisoning. But to call her useless and stupid and weak for that? I call bullshit. EVEN TODAY, people don’t believe the elderly capable of malicious and homicidal acts. Check out elderly murderers, see how long it took a lot of them to get caught.
Mulan and Snow White are both brave, emotionally strong, capable women. They go through intense trials, make mistakes, and receive their happy ending. NOT for fighting; Mulan saves China through cleverness and resourcefulness, not because she can headbutt cement. NOT for being passive; Snow White’s own resourcefulness and sweet nature earn the dwarfs’ love, which leads them to keep her in a glass coffin and not bury her alive. They’re different women, with different hardships, who overcome adversity in different ways.
AND THAT’S WONDERFUL. Because that is what women are like. There are Mulans, and there are Snow Whites. There are Belles and Auroras, Jasmines and Annas. Calling one useless and another strong, suggesting that a different personality and way of surviving is moving backwards is not just an insult to these characters, but an insult to the women they represent. In short,
